King is 12 years old now and there are items that I will continue to buy for him.

- Antlers
If you have a tough chewer, moose or elk antlers are the way to go. They do not splinter and they do not smell. King is 55 – 60lbs and I usually buy him the extra large antler so that it lasts him much longer. An extra large antler can probably last him a few months.
Be careful with thin rawhide or bully sticks if you have a tough chewer because those can be dangerous and a choking hazard. King loves bully sticks, but they’re so stinky and don’t last long AND I have to worry about him almost chocking on it when he gets to the end of it. - Ugly Chews are King’s new favorite – I have them delivered on a monthly subscription. Now that he is older, he still enjoys his antlers, but he definitely LOVES the Ugly Chews a bit more. They are dried cowhide rolls, not to be confused with rawhide. These cowhides are all natural, still have the hair on it, no chemicals or processing. Literally from a farm in Wyoming (American Made), hand cleaned and rolled. King wants to chew on these things all day if I let him. Did you know that dogs chewing on things like cowhide or antlers can help keep their teeth clean? If your dog isn’t good with brushing their teeth, consider getting them these chews.
- Freeze Dried Beef Liver Treats have been our go to treat for King his ENTIRE life. They are single ingredient treats, made in America and he just goes crazy for them. I like the PureBites brand because it comes in a large bag and the pieces are breakable. There are lots of other brands, but you just don’t get as much. I tried the Stewart brand, but the pieces are HUGE and I couldn’t really break them apart. King doesn’t chew, he inhales and I like to use the broken up liver treats for training time.
- Adrenal and Glandular Support Supplements were added to King’s morning breakfast last year. I wish I would have known more about the benefits of these products way earlier in King’s life. The Adrenal support has Ashwagandha as the main ingredient and it helps with Kings nervousness/anxiety so much. Before I started him on the Adrenal supplement he would get nervous about any small noise that he “thought” he heard. To the point he would start shaking and pacing and this is when myself or my husband are home with him. Once he started taking the supplement, he no longer has that behavior. It is such a small change, but he seems much more relaxed. The dose I give him does not make him sleepy.
The glandular support I started him on was because he got neutered at 11 years old. His prostate had become enlarged, which can happen with intact males, so neutering helps prevent the prostate from growing. The glandular support is glandular blend of [Liver, Cerebrum, Stomach, Kidney, Heart, Lung, Pancreas, Spleen, Duodenum, Thyroid, Adrenal, Thymus, Ovary, Pituitary, Hypothalamus, Lymphatic]. This helps with hormone balance ,after neutering your dog (or cat), and cognitive function. As King ages, that is really important to me.
I went with the Bark & Whiskers brand because it wasn’t too expensive and it had a high amount of servings. Both containers last a couple of months for a 55 – 60lb dog. - Cosequin and Green Lipped Mussels for joint health. These supplements you can use together or one or the other, depending on your preference. We started King on Cosequin when he was 10 years old, that was recommended by our vet. At 11 years old, I started him on the green lipped mussels. His joints do seem to be getting more stiff as he ages, so that is why I added the mussels. He’s had a couple of surgeries that have required him to be on rest, with not much movement for weeks at a time. Along with these supplements and assisted stretches, King is remaining mobile at 12 years old.
- Orijen dog food has been our go to kibble for King’s entire life. The quality of ingredients has really made a difference in King’s life as he ages. It is the second best option to feed your pet vs raw food. It is on the more expensive side, but with the amount of quality ingredients, there isn’t much extra you need to add to their food.
- Couch style dog bed is one of the only types of beds King will lay in. I always make sure to get one with a thick memory foam to protect his joints now that he is older. This is the most recent bed I bought him and I am able to lay in it with him when it is unfolded. He had surgery not too long ago and I was able to lay with him comfortably to care for him while he was coming off of anesthesia.
